The Plymouth and Luzerne County communities continue to remember the remarkable life of James J. Mahon III, a beloved educator, coach, mentor, and community leader whose dedication touched countless lives. His passing on June 25, 2022, following a tragic accident, left family, friends, former students, athletes, and community members with profound sadness while honoring a legacy built on compassion, commitment, and service.
Born on June 7, 1936, James was a lifelong resident of Luzerne County who never forgot his roots. As the son of a coal miner, he carried with him a deep appreciation for hard work, humility, and the importance of community. His journey from Harter High School to King’s College laid the foundation for a lifetime dedicated to education and helping others reach their full potential.
Throughout his long career as an educator, Jim served students in multiple school districts, including North Bergen, Falls-Overfield, Falls, Plymouth Area, and Wyoming Valley West. To him, teaching extended far beyond the classroom. He believed athletics provided an opportunity to develop character, discipline, teamwork, and confidence in young people.
As a coach, Jim’s impact reached far beyond wins and championships. He guided generations of athletes, teaching them valuable lessons about perseverance, respect, and becoming better individuals. His leadership at Bishop O’Reilly produced championship teams, but his greatest achievement was the positive influence he had on the young people he coached. He was fortunate to coach members of his own family, creating memories that will forever be treasured.
Jim’s commitment to his community extended beyond sports. He played an important role in local youth programs, helped establish Plymouth Township Little League, supported flood relief efforts following Hurricane Agnes, and created opportunities for children through community activities. His dedication reflected his belief that giving back was one of life’s greatest responsibilities.
Beyond his professional achievements, Jim was known for his warmth, loyalty, humor, and ability to connect with others. Friends and family will remember his conversations about college basketball, his beloved Carolina Tarheels, and his unwavering support for the Philadelphia Phillies. Most importantly, they will remember his love for his family and the countless lives he enriched.
He leaves behind a loving family, including his soulmate Lillian Michak, his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and many friends who will continue to carry his memory forward.
James J. Mahon III’s legacy is one of kindness, dedication, and service. Though he is deeply missed, the lessons he taught and the lives he influenced ensure that his memory will continue to inspire generations to come. May he rest in eternal peace.
