The Chesterfield and Henrico County communities are mourning the heartbreaking loss of Skylar Mackenzie Vargo, whose life was tragically cut short following a wrong-way collision on Interstate 295 in the early morning hours of Thursday. According to the Virginia State Police, troopers responded at approximately 2:27 a.m. to a serious crash near the Route 60 and Interstate 64 east exit at the 28-mile marker on Interstate 295 in Henrico County. A preliminary investigation determined that a Hyundai was traveling southbound in the northbound lanes when it collided head-on with a tractor-trailer.
The impact caused the tractor-trailer to cross the median and enter the southbound lanes before coming to rest. Following the collision, the Hyundai caught fire. Skylar Mackenzie Vargo, identified by authorities as the driver of the Hyundai and a resident of South Chesterfield, was pronounced dead at the scene despite the response of emergency personnel.
The driver of the tractor-trailer was not injured. Hazardous materials crews also responded after the truck began leaking diesel fuel and oil, and portions of the interstate remained closed while emergency personnel cleared the scene and investigators documented evidence. Virginia State Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
